Some weddings feel like a big reunion, and Sarah & John’s September 13th celebration was exactly that. I already felt connected to them before the big day even began, and that made photographing their wedding feel all the more special.
Sarah first found me after seeing a family session I photographed last fall for her cousin, Kathy. (Kathy and I actually went to high school together—small world!) When Sarah started browsing my website, she realized I had photographed another wedding earlier in February that she and John attended. The groom from that wedding turned out to be John’s cousin!
As if that wasn’t enough connections already, when I arrived on the wedding day, I spotted even more familiar faces. Two of the women in Sarah’s bridal party were also Lindbergh High School alums like me, and one of the ushers was someone I grew up with at church. Later at the reception, my husband’s cousin, Jordan, came over to say hello—he had grown up with John. That’s one of the things I love most about St. Louis: it feels like a big city that somehow manages to feel like a small town.
Sarah and John’s wedding was set against the elegant backdrop of The Leona in the historic Carondelet neighborhood. The venue’s 1920s architecture, endless hallways, and thoughtfully curated vintage-modern décor made every corner photo-worthy. There’s something about its labyrinth of staircases, arched doorways, and rich textures that made their day feel timeless and romantic.
I loved getting to know these two during the day. They met at work and have been together for six years—still working side by side at the health department here in St. Louis. They live in Dogtown with their beloved pointer, Sergio, and share a love for art and history. Some of their favorite memories together include date nights at the St. Louis Art Museum, which also happens to be where John proposed!
Sarah is vibrant and fun—she loves a good celebration—and John has a more reserved, thoughtful nature that balances her energy so beautifully. Together, they’re such a warm, genuine couple, and it was a joy to watch the way their friends and family surrounded them with laughter and love.
The day itself was sunny and hot—classic St. Louis September weather—but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. The celebration carried through from the heartfelt ceremony to a lively reception full of dancing, hugs, and all the joy you hope for on a wedding day.
